Education loans help many people get into top colleges and land good jobs. In his 2013 speech, Barack Obama, the former president of the United States, told the crowd that he didn’t pay off his student loans before he ran for the U.S. Senate. He was only able to pay off his loans in his 40s completely. However, if it weren’t for his education, he would not have been able to become the president of the world’s oldest democracy.

Like Barack Obama, many people take education loans to achieve their aspirations. Hence, it becomes crucial to understand the essence of education loans. When you take an education loan without collateral, it is called an unsecured loan. And, an education loan with collateral is known as a secured loan. Here, we are going to look at different aspects of a secured education loan and understand its benefits, eligibility, and everything important from a borrower’s perspective.

What are Secured Education Loans?

Secured education loans are loans that require a borrower to provide collateral or security against which the loan is provided. Keeping collateral gives an assurance to the lender that the borrower will pay off the loan on time. And, in case the borrower fails to repay, then this collateral is forfeited by the lender.

Secured education loans are also known as ‘collateral education loans’. These loans have become very common due to the advantages that come with them. But first, let’s look at their various features:

FeaturesMeaning
Low-Interest RatesSecured education loans come with a low interest rate as the borrower provides collateral for the loan.
Types of CollateralTangible assets- Physical assets that can not be moved from one place to another like a house, flat, non-agricultural land, apartment, shop, etc.

  • Longer repayment period- These loans come with a longer repayment period that can go up to 10-15 years.
